The post is funded by the NHS Lothian Charity and is part of wider Hospital welfare advice services at acute sites across Lothian:
An experienced adviser is required for this new project with the aim of tackling health inequalities through the reduction of poverty, maximisation of income and reduction of household expenditure by increasing uptake of welfare benefits and improving access to employment, housing and debt advice.
The post holder will provide provide a free, confidential, independent and impartial welfare rights advice service for patients, carers and staff at the Midlothian Community Hospital and Highbank Intermediate Care Facility.
Based at the Midlothian Community Hospital, Highbank and Penicuik CAB, the worker will provide help and assistance with checking benefit entitlement, completing benefit applications and challenging benefit decisions. The work will also include income maximisation, budgeting advice and some assistance with housing and debt issues (including housing debt).
The post holder will be responsible for developing and delivering the service to meet the aims of the project and the needs of the service users. A working knowledge and understanding of welfare benefits and good interpersonal skills are essential.
