Voices from the Frontline: the impact of the five-week wait

Our series of briefings, 'Voices from the Frontline', demonstrates the impact of changes to the UK social security system on people in Scotland. This latest briefing considers the impact of the five-week wait for a first payment for Universal Credit.

UC is designed to imitate the world of work by paying people monthly in arrears, including a five-week wait for first payment. This briefing highlights some of the problems that Scottish CAB clients have experienced during the five-week wait, the detriment that the wait can cause and makes recommendations for positive change.
