    New analysis by Citizens Advice Scotland has shone light onto the deeply uncomfortable reality lived by thousands of people in Scotland.  Between January and March this year, the issue of not having enough money to buy food was raised 1,311 times by clients.  That equates to one in every 50 Citizens Advice Bureau clients,

    Charity boss urges minister to lift block on £15m aid.

    Citizens Advice Scotland has today written to the UK Government urging them to enable an extra £15m in assistance to Scots affected by the Bedroom Tax. 

    The Scottish Government is ready to spend the extra money, but is unable to do so because of UK government spending limits. In today’s letter to UK Welfare Minister Lord Freud, CAS reveal that in the eight months since the Bedroom Tax was introduced, Scottish CABs have seen a 29% increase in Housing Benefit issues.

    Citizens Advice Scotland have called on Scottish and UK governments to work together to help those affected by the Under-Occupancy Charge (or ‘Bedroom Tax’). 

    The call comes as the Scottish Government says it is writing to the UK government in a bid to increase the amount of money it spends on the issue in Scotland.

    The House of Commons Committee on Scottish Affairs has today published an interim report on the Bedroom Tax, which backs the calls made by Citizens Advice Scotland for certain vulnerable groups to be exempt from the policy. 

    CAS gave evidence to the committee in June, and specifically called for exemptions for disabled people, including those whose condition meant they needed more space, or whose homes had been adapted for their use. These calls have been echoed by the committee in their report today, along with suggestions we made for changes to the system for giving financial help to those most in need.

    Citizens Advice Scotland have said that payday lenders are destroying the lives of thousands of people in Scotland. 

    Leading Payday Loans companies gave evidence to the House of Commons this morning, and defended their business by saying only ‘2 or 3 per cent’ of their customers got into financial difficulty.

    Scottish CAB advisers have seen huge increases in the numbers of people who are in rent arrears, following the introduction of the Bedroom Tax.   

    As a BBC Scotland report shows that Scottish Councils are owed £3m in rent arrears because of the recent changes, Citizens Advice Scotland have reported similar trends in CAB cases.

    The new Claimant Commitment started on Tuesday 15th October for new jobseekers in Inverness.  It will be rolled out to other Jobcentres across Scotland starting later this month and will be fully in place by April 2014.

    Citizens Advice Scotland fear that official figures showing the numbers of people using foodbanks are only the tip of the iceberg, and that the problem is much bigger under the surface. 

    The CAS statement comes on World Food Day (Wednesday 16th Oct) as the Trussell Trust reveals that 350,000 people across the UK had to use its foodbanks in the last 6 months.
