    Citizens Advice Scotland have said Royal Mail must maintain the ‘Universal Service Obligation’ *(USO), which protects delivery services for people in remote and rural areas.

    Royal Mail have today said that increased competition in the industry is reducing its profits, and warned that this might put the USO at risk.

    The Big Lottery (Support and Connect fund) has shone a light for vulnerable people engaged in the Criminal Justice system in the Stirling and Clackmannanshire area, by awarding Stirling CAB £126,884 to support and connect the activities of a joint initiative between CAB and the Criminal Justice Departments in both Stirling Council and Clackmannanshire Council.

    Margaret Burgess MSP and Minister for Housing and Welfare will officially  launch the CAB/Criminal Justice Alliance Project for the Criminal Justice Service of Stirling and Clackmannanshire Council on (Wednesday 7th May 10a.m. – 10.45 am).

    Today sees the launch of the Western Isles Poverty Action Group's (WIPAG) Survival Guide, an information booklet aimed at people in crisis.  

    Recent statistics show that 70% of islanders are suffering from fuel poverty, and frequently facing a choice between ‘heating or eating’. One child in ten lives below the poverty line in the Western Isles, WIPAG has stated. Beyond this, the Western Isles still suffer disproportionately-high food prices. Welfare reforms have also had troubling effects.

    Citizens Advice Bureaux across the country have long since been a port of call for those dealing with a whole raft of issues. 

    Now analysis by Citizens Advice Scotland has shown that in 2012/13, the Scottish CAB Service dealt with over one million issues.  The majority of these issues - nearly 850,000 - were brought directly to a Citizens Advice Bureau (including the Citizens Advice Direct telephone helpline) with another 200,000 issues being processed by the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline.
