HND Legal Services students from the New College Lanarkshire: Motherwell Campus have developed a legal guide for refugees, as part of a project in collaboration with the Crown Office’s Project Safe.
Over the course of seven months, the students researched a wide range of issues that affect those unfamiliar with Scots Law, in order to provide asylum seekers and refugees with a guide to everyday laws including divorce, domestic abuse, littering and driving laws.
They presented the guide as part of Scots Law at the Hate Crime Conference in Hampden Park, attended by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland QC, Police Scotland Chief Constable Phil Gormley and John Wilkes from the Scottish Refugee Council. The guide is available in several different languages and is to be distributed by the Crown Office to refugees entering the country.
