Ayr Academy emerged victorious from this year’s Scottish Young Consumer Quiz Final, and will go on to represent Scotland in the UK final. The 2015 event, held at the Scottish Parliament, was the third Young Consumer competition in a row that Citizens Advice Scotland’s Community Action Team has supported. CAS CEO Margaret Lynch formally opened the competition, as well as handing out certificates and prizes to all participants at the end of proceedings.
In a pulsating final, the South Ayrshire youngsters defeated last year’s winners Boroughmuir High (Edinburgh), as well as Fortrose Academy (Highland), Kirkintilloch High School (East Dunbartonshire) and Harris Academy (Dundee). All teams showed incisive knowledge of their consumer rights and responsibilities, answering team and ‘buzzer’ questions on subjects including Food and Drink, Consumer Affairs and Money and Credit.
The final, again sponsored by CAS, Veolia water and Dave Thomson MSP, and hosted by Highland Council Trading Standards, was the culmination of heats across Scotland. Glenys Brown, Trading Standards Officer with Highland Council and a key figure in the competition said: ‘I would like to thank all teams taking part, and for their courteous and spirited contributions. All teams worked extremely hard to reach the Scottish Young Consumer of the Year Final.’
Ayr Academy will now travel to London on June 24th to participate in the UK Final.
