East Sutherland CAB recently held a successful coffee morning. Volunteer Support Officer Jim McCourt explains why: "For some time, East Sutherland CAB have had concerns about the new disability benefit – Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – and its impact on the local population. People seem confused about the changes from DLA, and reluctant to claim the new benefit. There have also been long delays in getting medical assessments, and in the decision-making processes. Numerous clients have had to wait six months or more before receiving their entitlement."
Jim continues: "To help address these difficulties, East Sutherland CAB recently held a coffee morning, hosted by staff members Mrs Shirley McHardy and Ms Chris Dall. Health professionals, politicians and members of the public were invited along for tea, coffee and cake, to give the bureau an opportunity to explain about PIP, and how CAB could help with the claims process. Shirley created a leaflet highlighting the main points we wanted to get across. A good time was had by all, and the local community are, hopefully, more aware of CAB’s role and how we are working for improvements to ensure that everyone gets the assistance they need."
