Councils should aim to keep burial and cremation costs as low as possible.

Citizens Advice Scotland has responded to news that several Scottish Councils are making a significant profit from the provision of burial and cremation services.

Ruth Mendel, policy officer at Citizens Advice Scotland, says,

“We understand that Councils are under huge financial pressures at the moment. However, we would hope that they would all work to do everything they can to reduce the costs of burials and cremations for people at what is a difficult time in their lives.

“Anyone who is finding it hard to cope with the cost of a funeral can get free, confidential advice from their local CAB on what support may be available.”
