The UK government has announced that it will make it easier for people to claim assistance to meet the cost of funerals.
Responding, Citizens Advice Scotland spokesperson Ruth Mendel says,
"We welcome the reforms announced to the Funeral Expenses Payments scheme, which will make it easier for people to claim support. However this in itself will not go far enough in addressing the growing problem of funeral poverty.
“The cost of funerals has increased substantially since the last time this payment was increased in 2003. CAB advisers see many people who are unable to pay for a funeral, even with this assistance. So in addition to making the claim process easier, we would like to see the payments increased to reflect the costs of funerals."
