Debt Bill “Will Change Lives”

11 Feb 2010

Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS) have said that the Home Owner and Debtor Protection Bill, being voted on today by the Scottish Parliament, will change the lives of many people in Scotland who are in debt and in fear of losing their home.

The Bill was debated at Stage 3 this morning and will be voted on at 5pm today, where (judging by the debate) it is likely to receive majority support.

CAS Head of Social Policy Susan McPhee said,

“Every week CAB advisers across Scotland are facing people who are drowning in debt and who are in danger of losing their homes. There are some good schemes already in place which offer some help, but lots of the most vulnerable people currently can’t access those. This bill is about closing those gaps and extending help to everyone who needs it.

“This bill will change lives and help many of the most vulnerable Scots beat the worst effects of the recession.”

CAS staff are available for interview or further briefing. Please contact Tony Hutson on 0131 550 1010 or 07774 751655.
