    The ‘Energy Best Deal Scotland’ campaign involved frontline advisors in helping vulnerable people cut their energy bills.Around 10,000 households are saving up to £765,000 each year on their energy bills as a result. Consumer Focus Scotland has commissioned an evaluation of the energy training given to frontline advisers. This has shown that tariff advice can and does help reduce fuel bills and involving frontline advisers, does help reach vulnerable people.

    Thousands of people in Scotland are being forced to rely on charities for food handouts, according to new evidence from Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS).The report published today (Tuesday) shows that the numbers of Scottish CAB clients who have made a charitable application has doubled over the last 2 years to 2,200.

    Energy Best Deal+ is a pilot CAB project which aims to support people in, or at risk of, fuel poverty. There are nine bureaux in Scotland taking part in the pilot and outreach work is also taking place in Edinburgh. The pilot has been running for four weeks and has produced superb results for the clients involved, on a number of fronts.

    Leith Citizens Advice Bureau is moving to larger premises, to help volunteers cope with the record numbers of people who need advice on issues like debt, housing, employment and benefits. The Leith Bureau – part of Citizens Advice Edinburgh - has been based in Great Junction Street since 1984. But with a 25% rise in clients since 2008, the advice service has been searching for a building to meet current levels of demand.

    Citizens Advice Scotland have today published a major new report showing how Scotland’s graduates have been hit by the recession.  ‘Degrees of Insecurity’ is based on a CAS survey of nearly 1,000 recent Scottish graduates, and reveals that many of them struggle with unemployment or low income jobs as they enter the job market.

    Citizens Advice Scotland have responded to today’s insolvency figures, urging those who are struggling financially to get advice before making any major decisions about their finances.Accountant in Bankruptcy (AiB) today report there were 5,601 personal insolvencies in Scotland in the first quarter of 2012/13. This is a 14.9 per cent increase on the previous quarter and a 5.3 per cent increase on the same period in the previous year.

    Scotland’s Infrastructure Secretary Alex Neil MSP will today (Tuesday) launch a major new project which will see local citizens advice bureaux offer special help to Scots who can’t afford their gas and electricity bills.

    The Energy Best Deal Plus scheme will be launched at Airdrie CAB – one of the 9 bureaux where it will initially be available. (The others are Dumfries and Galloway, Denny & Dunipace, Motherwell & Wishaw, North Ayrshire, Nairn, Roxburgh & Berwickshire, Stirling and Rutherglen/Cambuslang).

    Many of Scotland’s armed forces veterans struggle to re-integrate into the civilian community, and need special help to cope with problems like debt, unemployment and low income. That’s one of the main findings of Scotland’s Armed Forces Advice Project (ASAP) in its first major report.‘Civvy Street – the New Front Line’ describes the work done by the project since it was established by Citizens Advice Scotland two years ago. The issues it raises will be debated this afternoon in the Scottish Parliament, and a motion has also been lodged in the House of Commons.
