How citizens advice bureaux are funded
Many people do not realise that each citizens advice bureau in Scotland is an independent, autonomous registered charity. Each bureau is responsible for raising the money it needs to deliver a service to its local community.
Each bureau is funded slightly differently, from a range of funding streams that include:
- Local authorities (both core and project) - the main funders of Scottish citizens advice bureaux
- The Community Fund
- Charitable trusts and grant-making bodies
- European Union funding
- Health boards, trusts and local healthcare co-operatives
- Citizens Advice Scotland's Development Fund
- Regeneration and strategic development schemes
- Private sector sources
- "Friends of the CAB" and other local fundraising activity
If you think that you or your organisation could help fund your local bureau, then contact your local bureau to see what you can do.

It still costs money to deliver a service that's free when you use it
