How bureaux are funded

Image of banknotesMany people do not realise that each CAB in Scotland is an independent, autonomous registered charity. Each bureau is responsible for raising the money it needs to deliver a service to its local community.

Each bureau is funded slightly differently, from a range of funding streams that include:

  • Local authorities (both core and project) - the main funders of Scottish citizens advice bureaux. For some bureaux, this has involved successfully tendering to be a service provider
  • Statutory organisations such as The Scottish Government, HMRC and the EHRC
  • Partnerships with other organisations, such as Macmillan Cancer Support
  • Charitable trusts and foundations, such as The Robertson Trust, the Big Lottery Fund and Comic Relief
  • The Scottish Legal Aid Board
  • Citizens Advice Scotland's Development Fund
  • Health Boards and Community Health/Care Partnerships
  • Regeneration and strategic development schemes
  • Private sector sources such as Scottish and Southern Energy and Nationwide
  • "Friends of the CAB" and other local fundraising activity
  • Income generation e.g. charging for training, consultancy support, office space and so on

If you think that you or your organisation could help fund your local bureau, get in touch with the CAS Funding Taskforce.
